Professor Carl Smith of Northwestern University will present a slide lecture on the 1909 Plan of Chicago, often called the Burnham Plan after its principal author, legendary architect, city planner, and long-time Evanston resident Daniel Burnham. Smith is author of The Plan of Chicago: Daniel Burnham and the Remaking of the American City, published by the University of Chicago Press, which recently was awarded the Lewis Mumford Prize for Best Book in American Planning History. Arguably the most influential document in the history of American urban planning, the Plan of Chicago is full of stirring prose and magnificent illustrations. It proposed many of the city's most distinctive features, including its lakefront parks and roadways, the Magnificent Mile, and Navy Pier. It established the concept of city planning in the United States and encouraged the reconceptualization of urban life itself.Event submitted by Eventful.com on behalf of evanstonlibrary.
